Advantage provided fiber optic engineering and permitting services for the extensions of the Inter-County Broadband Network (ICBN) in support of upgrades to existing telecommunications facilities in Columbia, Maryland.
To design an extension of the ICBN backbone, Advantage conducted geophysical surveys, including easements and plats research, for an extension beginning at the existing backbone at the cross streets of Columbia Gateway Drive and Robert Fulton Drive. The extension ended near Corporate Office Properties Trust (COPT) Business Park and the land parcel included five buildings. Advantage also engineered a lateral of the ICBN backbone located at 7021 Columbia Gateway Drive. In addition, Advantage completed construction plan drawings and as-built drawings for the clients for both projects.
In support of the existing ICBN Network, Advantage Engineers geospatially located the entire 175+ miles of Howard County fiber with sub-meter accuracy. Advantage used state of the art equipment and software to locate the placement of over 1,400 handholes, splice enclosures and fiber located throughout Howard County, Maryland. In addition, Advantage documented all observed deficiencies in the Howard County Fiber network and was able to recommend cost effective solutions. Advantage compiled the data and delivered a report to Howard County including a GIS file to import directly into their Network Management Database.
Advantage’s telecommunications engineering services with the ICBN are a result of a $115 million grant awarded to the State of Maryland and sub-recipients under the Recovery Act’s Broadband Technology Opportunities Program. The ICBN included 850 miles of high-speed fiber optic network, which brought voice, data and video services to a host of municipal anchor institutes comprising of primary and secondary education, public safety, continuant services and government facilities. Advantage received a $2 million contract and was the primary project engineer for the design of over 250 miles of the fiber optic network.
