Penn Square Marriott Hotel & Convention Center

Advantage Engineers has completed geotechnical engineering services for the construction phase of the Penn Square Marriott Hotel and Convention Center. Services included the full-time, on-site engineering review and oversight of placement of structural fill, construction of storm draingage features, utility installation, foundation and slab construction, structural stell erection, installation of paving elements, and laboratory testing of construction materials to verify conformance with project specifications, including concrete, masonry and grout specimens.

The Penn Square Marriot Hotel and Convention Center is a 19-story hotel with a 60,000 square foot Convention Center.  With a construction cost of at approximately $170.5 million, this project is one of several that have recently been completed to help revitalize downtown Lancaster.

Advantage Engineers staff and field technicians provided complete oversight and monitoring of the following:

  • Excavation and structural fill placement
  • Inspection of the foundation sub-grade for bearing capacity
  • Review of the depth foundation system, including:
    • monitoring all preparations for concrete to include sub-base, base course, vapor barriers, reinforcing steel, pre-tensioned concrete, and formwork
  • Conducted testing of all cast-in-place concrete and masonry activities.

Over 700 sets of concrete compressive strength test specimens were cast and tested for the project.  Advantage Engineers conducted destructive and non-destructive testing of hardened concrete when the competency of some elements was questioned.
